Da Shan reveals Canada’s creative cleverness

Date:28/09/2009

The Canada Pavilion, shaped like a looped ribbon or the letter “C,” will touch upon the vitality of cities with the theme “The Living City: Inclusive, Sustainable, Creative.”

Mark Rowswell, Canada’s commissioner general for Expo 2010, told a press conference late last week that construction was running very smoothly and the structure is expected to become the first finished self-built pavilion.

Visitors will enter through an open-air public square and then circulate through the larger structure that houses the public displays.

The cooperation between the pavilion and Cirque du Soleil, one of Canada’s most famous cultural exports, is featured. The troupe made its debut on the Chinese mainland last summer, bringing the Quidam show to Shanghai, its only stop in China.

It is responsible for designing the pavilion’s creative concept, public presentation and cultural programs, as well as developing strategic corporate alliances. The pavilion will be the hub of a wide array of special events and activities.

Artists will be selected to perform from about 1,000 applications from across Canada. Rowswell said the presentation aims to “give a brand-new impression of Canada” to Chinese visitors, replacing images of vast tracts of land.

As an example, there will be a “virtual fountain” with images that change when people touch it and vary according to how many people are touching it. That symbolizes the contribution of every citizen to the city, he said.

Rowswell, better known under his stage name “Da Shan” in China, is the “most famous foreigner in China” for his role performing xiangsheng (a popular form of comic dialogue). He didn’t rule out the possibility of performing xiangsheng at the 6,000-square-meter pavilion.

The pavilion is expected to attract at least 30,000 visitors daily, Rowswell said.

冰岛租赁馆正式移交

The Iceland Pavilion is handed over from the Expo organizer to Iceland.

Hard times and budget cuts aside, Iceland is geared up a whiz-bang showcase effort for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

Iceland, badly affected by the global economic crisis, had to prune its Expo spending by about half to US$2 million, the top official for the nation’s Expo participation said yesterday.

The Shanghai Expo organizer yesterday handed over a 500-square-meter pavilion space to Iceland, which the country will decorate into an “Ice Cube,” similar to China’s National Aquatics Center, or Water Cube.

Iceland was convinced that the Expo would help the country fight its way out of economic woes, said Gunnar Gunnarsson, ambassador of Iceland and commissioner general for Iceland for the Expo.

Iceland would set up a business center in the pavilion to seek opportunities, said Hreinn Palsson, the country’s deputy commissioner general and pavilion director.

It would introduce how Iceland used clean renewable energy, in its pavilion, Palsson said.

The Icelandic government will allocate two-thirds of the budget.

The Iceland pavilion theme is “Pure Energy — Healthy Living.”

Dr. Jean Ping, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, yesterday visited the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination and the construction site of the Joint-Africa Pavilion.

The Joint-Africa Pavilion, which is being built by the Expo 2010 organizer, covers an area of about 3.5 soccer fields, the largest in 11 joint pavilions. The pavilion will host exhibitions from about 40 African countries and the African Union.

Watching near-completed pavilion, Ping said he was satisfied and hoped that the African Union’s exhibition will effectively showcase Africa’s development and features during the Expo period starting next May.

Later yesterday, Ping visited the Tongji University and viewed a model and an artistic rendition of African Union’s conference center designed by architects from the university. He also learned about the details of the video and audio systems in the center. The center is being built by Chinese constructors and will be completed by 2011 in African Union’s headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

He said that the friendship between China and Africa has developed from nation to nation friendship to multilateral co-operation between China and the entire African continent. The building of the conference center is the landmark and milestone for this friendship, he said.

Ping arrived in Shanghai on Thursday afternoon and left Shanghai for his homeland yesterday afternoon.
